This Week at WLE – October 16, 2016

Posted: October 16, 2016

Information

  • Hot Lunch ordering on Munchalunch has been reopened until Monday at 5:00, in case you missed ordering previously.
  • How many old batteries do you have kicking around the house? We can take care of that for you from October 17-23. And what’s more, we’re doing it as part of a contest. The school in Canada with the greatest collection (in weight) and the school with the greatest collection PER STUDENT each win $1500. Given how things went for us last year, the first category will be tough when there are schools with 600 kids out there, but the per student category has WLE written all over it. Save up those batteries, and send them to school the week of October 17. We have bags for bagging cel phone batteries, adn we can take any single-use or rechargeable batteries up to 5kg each (No car batteries, please), so that old cordless drill battery that won’t hold a charge for long enough to drive a single screw can come here for appropriate recycling. If we all get on board, maybe we can see some cash come into the school to help fund our garden project. That would be a cool way to help our environment twice with a single action.Screen Shot 2016-10-04 at 9.00.33 AM
  • We have all been seeing and hearing in the news about fentanyl and the threat it poses to people. While our students at WLE are certainly not at high risk, there are things that all of us would benefit from knowing, as this issue spreads throughout our communities. These two documents provide some background information that might be of interest to some of our families.
  • Are you ready for an emergency? The Great Shakeout is this week. Join us from wherever your are as we at the school ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ to practice getting ready for an earthquake. We will be sheltering, then evacuating the school with our emergency packs, regardless of weather, just like we’ll have to do in a real emergency. The government of BC has provided information on all sorts of earthquake and emergency related topics, like emergency kits, for example.
  • The Halloween Carnival is coming on October 31 (Monday). Don’t forget to send in good used toys that aren’t getting used at home for the Dead Toy Sale. Donations support the grade 7 Camp program.

Munchalunch Ordering

For those who missed ordering hot lunch and treats for October to December, munchalunch has been reopened. Please make sure you place your orders before Monday October 17th at 5pm when the session closes. We will not be able to accept late orders after this time.

Fundraising made easy!

The PAC is happy to announce our newest way you can help fundraise for the school. BOSTON PIZZZA in Walnut Grove is running a “give back to school” program. Next time you dine at BOSTON PIZZA, write West Langley Elementary on the top of your receipt and drop it in the marked box on the way out. Receipts will be collected and BOSTON PIZZA will donate back a percentage of the totals to our school. Make sure you tell all your friends and family about this special give back program and they can help too.

COBS, COBS, COBS!

Cobs is our year round fundraiser that helps our school “raise dough”. Stock up on goodies for lunches and mention West Langley before you pay and a percentage of all purchases comes back to our school. Join us at our PAC meeting on October 25th, when a representative of Cobs will present us with a cheque for last years totals.

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • So you’ll see some changes to the report cards this year, as we move towards implementing the new BC Curriculum and the assessment changes that come along with it. For those of us who grew up with percentages, averages, and letter grades, some of this may be a little unsettling, but it is far better for learning not to try to condense a whole term of learning into a single letter. Here are a few articles that speak to better ways to assess and communicate student learning.
