The Final Week at WLE

Posted: June 25, 2017

Information

  • Well, we’re through another school year. This was my 23rd year as an educator, and I can confidently say that it has been the best year yet! Thank you to all teachers, support staff, families and students for being so wonderful, and for making West Langley the special place that it is. I wish you all a summer filled with laughter and adventure! I hope that you and your families will get to spend more time outside than in, and that everyone, grown-ups included, spends some time doing something they’ve never done before!
  • Our year-end assembly is on Thursday at 9:00. Join us for a fun slide show, presentation of Track & XC Ribbons, Math Contest participants and more. We might even have some sort of a flash mob or maybe a sing-along!
  • So the City of Langley are opening a renovated Penzer Park this week, and they’ve put in a Parkour Park. No joke. Check out this preview video. It looks cool, even though I’m not strong enough to do any of these tricks anymore; in fact, my shoulders hurt having watched the video a couple of times. Having observed our students all year, though, I think we have a significant number who would find it a blast! There’s also a paved pump track for bikes, and more! Click the poster at the right for a bigger picture!
  • There are lots of events and announcements on the district’s Community Bulletin Board. It is updated regularly and is curated carefully. Check it out.
  • There are two Summer Reading Clubs at the Langley Libraries. Click on each poster for a full picture and details!

PAC Happenings

Thanks to all WLE families for supporting PAC activities, sharing ideas, and volunteering your time!

Quote of the Week

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • This is an American article, but I think what it addresses is happening in Canada, too, at least based on my conversations with young people. Teens aren’t getting summer jobs the way we used to!
  • It might rain some this summer. If it does, and you’re driven inside, here are some board games (bored games?) that encourage kids to keep moving and work together.
  • What to do? What to do? Here are 100 Things to do in Vancouver This Summer. Now, I know I don’t always count accurately on 5 Things, but this page really only shows 25. And it’s missing the Surrey Fusion Festival, which I attended and loved last year. Plan on a full day, and arrive with an empty stomach. There’s a huge range of ethnic food to try, concerts to enjoy (see below), and more!
  • Summer Homework! I have drawn up this little list of homework assignments for WLE students to work on over the summer. You know me well enough now to know that this isn’t your regular homework list. I don’t even believe in homework to speak of! Bring back your checklist on September 5!
