This Week at WLE – October 10, 2016

Posted: October 10, 2016

Information

  •  Screen Shot 2016-10-02 at 9.59.43 AM On October 17 there will be a free session for parents that looks at ADHD in kids. Registration details are here. Space is probably going fast.
  • How many old batteries do you have kicking around the house? We can take care of that for you from October 17-23. And what’s more, we’re doing it as part of a contest. The school in Canada with the greatest collection (in weight) and the school with the greatest collection PER STUDENT each win $1500. Given how things went for us last year, the first category will be tough when there are schools with 600 kids out there, but the per student category has WLE written all over it. Save up those batteries, and send them to school the week of October 17. We have bags for bagging cel phone batteries, adn we can take any single-use or rechargeable batteries up to 5kg each (No car batteries, please), so that old cordless drill battery that won’t hold a charge for long enough to drive a single screw can come here for appropriate recycling. If we all get on board, maybe we can see some cash come into the school to help fund our garden project. That would be a cool way to help our environment twice with a single action.Screen Shot 2016-10-04 at 9.00.33 AM
  • On Wednesday, I sent an email that included a letter to parents from the Minister of Education. Here’s that letter, in case you missed it.

  • The Athletics Department at Walnut Grove Secondary are hosting a special cross country meet for interested grade 4-7 students from the region’s elementary school this Friday.

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • At the meeting about Middle Schools on Wednesday, we saw this video that addressed the ‘myths’ about the adolescent brain that many of us (myself included) have held onto that are not so much true. It made me think about what we do in schools as well as about what I do as a parent of 12- and 14-year olds. This article addresses them in a bit more detail, too.
