This Week at WLE – March 3, 2019

Posted: March 3, 2019

Information

  • The Jumping of the Ropes may be over, but the fundraising goes on for another few days. Get some donations, and threaten Mr. Oliver’s hair! All paper donations in envelopes must be in by Wednesday, as the Heart & Stroke Foundation are collecting them first thing Thursday morning. Online fundraising continues indefinitely, I believe, but the counting of donations for the prizes will also be done at the end of the week. As of 7:41 pm on Sunday, we’re at $2860 raised. Keep it up, Lions! To make things interesting, I’ll actually lower the goal for head-shaving to $4000, but not a penny less!
  • Student Led Conferences/Parent Teacher Interviews are next Wednesday and Thursday. Please plan to attend, and sign up for a time slot here. Use the tabs at the bottom of the screen to navigate between Wednesday afternoon, Wednesday evening, and Thursday afternoon. Please note that you should use only your child’s first name and last initial when you sign up. Also please note that adding names has not generally worked for people on mobile devices unless you have the google docs app installed.
  • Huge congratulations to the WGSS Grade 8 Girls’ Basketball Team (including former WLE Lion, Robyn) who are the 2019 Provincial Champs, and to the Senior Girls’ Basketball Team who finished with the Silver Medal at the provincial championships last night. Congratulations also to the Junior Boys’ team at WGSS who finished in 5th at their provincial tournament.
  • I’m not sure why you might want to leave this fantastic little school (except to go to high school, grade 7s) but I do totally believe in the value of outdoor education to, so there’s this for you to see. Note that there are spaces available for grades 3 & 4 next year, and there’s an information session on March 7 at Gordon Greenwood Elementary.
  • Here are two other upcoming events that might be of interest, too:

Quote of the Week

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • So at Jump Rope for Heart, a bunch of kids asked me to play ‘Take On Me’ which, from their singing, I took to be the song I remember having a great video when I was in grade 8 or so. Coincidentally, Jimmy Fallon and Weezer just did a cover of it. Also, since when do kids in grade 7 in 2019 know all the words to Rick Astley? I feel like I’m in a time warp. Once more, kudos to you parents keeping the ’80s music alive with your kids.
  • On a more serious note, here’s a thing from National Public Radio in the states – When Kids Ask Really Tough Questions. It is excellent. And NOT FOR KIDS’ EYES necessarily.
