This Week at WLE – June 11, 2017

Posted: June 11, 2017

Information

  •  The Bike Parade and Sports Day are this Friday. Cross your fingers for sun, and don’t forget to wear your colours, decorate your bike, and bring your helmet! We’ve been trying to think of how we can maintain our traditional colour teams and also incorporate Canada150 into our event this year, so here’s the thing: Decorate yourself in your team colours (these should come home with kids on Monday), and if you’re bringing wheels, decorate your wheels to celebrate Canada! And while we are a ‘rain or shine’ sort of school, and will go ahead if the weather forecast below holds true, it might pay to plan ahead in terms of wardrobe choices. If you click the forecast below, it will (I hope) take you to the most up-to-date weather forecast from Environment Canada.

  • As part of Sports Day, there will be a concession for parents (kids also have some access times) and a Hot Lunch for students. Orders are due this Tuesday, June 13. Here’s the form: HOT LUNCH order form Sports Day 2017
  •  We will be distributing final report cards electronically this year, as well as on paper. Watch for a how-to screencast coming soon!

Quote of the Week

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • Have a perfectionist kid? Here are some ways to help those kids, who are so hard on themselves, be a little less-so. From Dr. Michele Borba, a faviourite of mine.
  • The idea of self-regulation and self-control is frequently talked about in education these days. And I know I’ve had conversations with adults in our community about improving students’ ability to control their impulses, at least some of the time. This article talks about research-based strategies to help kids develop self control. The embedded videos of kids in a research study are amusing, and I challenge all the adults in the room to test their own self-control by watching the whole Sesame Street video embedded in there.
