Information
- Summer School registration is open. There is a huge range of learning opportunities for students of elementary and middle-school age to try through the first few weeks of summer. Some programs are in such high demand that they are nearly full already. It is also worth noting that while Langley students can register now, the system will open up to out-of-district students in a few week, so if you want to register, you should do so asap.
- This week, our school will be enjoying a PAC-supported in-school tennis program. Each student will have 4×35-minute sessions (paid for by the PAC) with a professional instructor. In addition to this program, the provider is also offering an optional after-school program to students in grades 2-7 (at an additional cost to parents of $75 including instruction, a raquet and a
t-shirt). They have sent a permission form here which I sent home on paper Friday. Students may register after the first day (pro-rated) as well. More details are on the form.
- We said goodbye on Friday to Ms. Serviss, our Aboriginal Support Worker. I want to thank her for her hard work, intense care for all our students, and for the wisdom and teaching that she shared with me personally, our staff and students.
- The WE Day students are planning a charity car wash at WLE on Friday, April 26. Bring your dirty car by any time after lunch (all the way until 33:30 pm) and have it hand washed by donation. Donations go to the WE Charity to support families in the developing world to generate income for themselves – we buy goats that provide milk, wool and maybe baby goats. Washing will be supervised by Mr. Oliver who is sort of picky about cars and how they should be washed.
- The District Calendars for the next three years have been approved by the school board. If you’re wondering why the calendars are the way they are, here’s some info.
- Here is a trio of upcoming events that might be of interest, too. I love cars – old, new, borrowed, blue – and do my best to get out to Poppy for their show. It’s always got a big turnout as it is the first big show of the year. I hope, too, to see some of you (and kids from grades 5 and up) at the Screenagers screening too.

Interesting Reading & Viewing
- I’m not sure I agree with everything in this article, but it does make some interesting points about exposing kids (young ones!) to small risks and mishaps. There’s also an interesting bit about consequences, saying that they should be ‘Any consequence should be revealed in advance, respectful, related to the decision the child made, and reasonable in scope’ (confession: I haven’t always gotten these right with my own kids). Why Children Aren’t Behaving, and What You Can Do About It.
- Mrs. Gorseth shared this resource with me. It offers some interesting ideas on the Rights of Children in relation to screen time. It’s certainly not unbiased, and I don’t know that I agree with everything the author says (actually, I know I don’t agree with everything he says) but I try not to let that stop me from sharing something. Parenting and Screens: The 7 Rights of a Child.
