Information
- Welcome back, Lions! We hope you had a fantastic break filled with adventure and new experiences.
- I have had several questions recently about setting up the School Cash Online payment system.
It is separate from Myeducation BC (see below). To set up School Cash Online, go to the site, and click ‘Sign In’ in the top right. Then choose ‘Register’ at the bottom of the menu that pops up. Once you have set up a username and password (picky requirements that you have to meet for it to work), you select our school and ‘claim’ your kids. To connect to your own children, you need their legal name, birthdate (use the calendar picker, rather than typing it in) and their Pupil number. Pupil Numbers were on personalized letters that came home for the black & pink shirt orders; they can also be provided by the office. Once you’ve connected to the kids, you’ll get emails for any relevant purchasable items for them. If you want to see the original instruction letter, it’s here (without student-specific details).
- If you have a child (or know of one) who still hasn’t been registered to attend WLE in September, please get that registration in by noon on Wednesday. After that, spots in neighbourhood schools are not guaranteed for students who are not registered, even siblings of kids who are already in a school.
- The WE Day students will be conducting a battery recycling drive over the next two weeks. They will be sending out information regarding when and how you can send in old batteries for recycling, and so that donations of nutritional Zinc are made to match. WE win two ways: old batteries stay out of the landfills, and children in developing countries gain access to Zinc, a critical nutritional mineral they often otherwise lack.
- The School Garden is coming. We are working on having the school garden installed this spring. We will be looking for a source of good quality garden soil to fill our planters. If you know of a local business who might be interested in sponsoring or donating, please let Mr. Oliver know.

Interesting Reading & Viewing
- When I teach math, I get kids asking things like “Why does + mean plus?” Like all self-respecting adults, I say, ‘it just does, trust me.’ This video shares the origins of some of our math symbols, and, a bit surprisingly, it turns out that some of them really are just arbitrary. The common core, though, is that they are meant to economize – they let us write complicated ideas simply.
- Would you believe that there are a bunch of educational things in this music video?
- I hope that many of you are better at this than I am, but here’s a set of 5 Ways to Counteract Your Smartphone Addiction from Harvard Business Review.
