This Week at WLE – May 19, 2019

Posted: May 20, 2019

Information

  • The Kids Helping Kids Clothing Drive is on! Drop of clean, useable clothing donations at the school before May 31 for pickup by the Township of Langley Firefighters Charitable Society, the Local 3253 Langley City Professional Firefighters Association and the Langley School District Foundation. Please note that this one is a straight clothing drive, not household items.
  • On May 22, at 7pm, Lynn Fripps Elementary is hosting a White Hatter presentation on Internet Safety for parents (with the lens on kids’ safety). We had the opportunity to see a White Hatter talk last year, and it was great. If you missed that one (or just want a repeat), you are welcome to attend.
  • Bike to School Week is May 27-31. Come to the front porch of the school each day to register your bike trip. Don’t want to bike? Register any active commute (scooter, walk/run, cartwheel) to be eligible for a prize. Here’s some inspiration (and having tried rollers one time, with a wall and a helper for support), I can tell you that this young rider is brave, persistent and skilled far beyond myself. And if you look at her ‘making of’ video on youtube, you’ll see someone who isn’t afraid to fail.
  • Maybe you know this, and maybe you don’t, but Langley Secondary School is being replaced next year, and 2019 is the 110th anniversary of LSS (formerly Langley High School). On June 8 there will be an anniversary event/farewell to the old building, and everyone will be invited. Here’s some information about it.

Quote(s) of the Week

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • I came across this article on diminishing eulachon stocks and the Kwantlen First Nation. I can’t even imagine the ‘silver lining’ that Fern Gabriel refers to, and it used to happen in my lifetime.
  • I found this TED talk from India fascinating on a couple of levels – the speaker (who looks younger than some of our grade 7s) uses language beautifully (a great example for our aspiring writers at WLE) and his flattening of class hierarchy is inspiring. I also loved the host’s life lesson shared at the end, about listening to your critics and supporters in the face of failure and about the value of time spent in introspection and contemplation. That part, I think our fast-paced society pushes us away from unless we make a really concerted effort. Powerful Life Lessons….
