This Week at WLE – September 17, 2017

Posted: September 17, 2017

Information

  • West Langley is part of the Indigo Adopt a School program this month. Watch for details from the PAC on how you can help drum up support for our school’s Learning Commons (library) and help us make WLE an even more awesome place to learn.
  • Wednesday is our Meet The Teacher & Community BBQ night. BBQ dinner (burgers & smokies, along with sides and drinks) will be available for sale at 5:00 or a bit before, with proceeds benefiting the Grade 7 Outdoor Education program. Come join us for dinner and conversation, and then check out where your child will be learning this year. Teachers will open classrooms for you to visit with your child, check out the learning environment and meet the teacher from 5:30-6:30.
  • Our first Cross Country meet is this week. Runners will be leaving the school right after dismissal, once Mrs. Gorseth and Ms. Edlund have sorted out the drivers and rides. Thanks to both of them for their support, and thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to drive. With all the kids who have signed up, we’ll need those seats. Parents of runners, if your kids still require booster seats, please make sure those are at the school with them on Tuesday.
  • Individual Photos will be taken on Tuesday. We will call classes down right after attendance (starting with Kindergarten and then primary students). There will be retakes done in October, so if your child misses these, don’t worry.
  • On October 2, we will need some parent volunteers to help install the Stream of Dreams salmon art installation on the front fence. The project people tell me that the work of twisting wires to attach the salmon to the fence is too difficult for kid hands. They do provide pliers, though if you want to bring your own, lineman’s pliers are recommended. Work gloves are also strongly recommended. We need 6-8 volunteers for the whole day (they estimate installation of our 260 fish will take 4-6 hours depending on numbers of volunteers), or enough people available for part of the day to add up to the same number of person-hours. Please sign up here if you are able to help.

PAC Happenings

PAC Happenings

The West Langley PAC is the official parent community to support families at this great little school. Throughout the year, we host events, plan fundraisers, share information and support many aspects of your child’s learning.

HOW TO FIND OUT WHAT’S GOING ON:

  • EMAIL: ‘What’s Happening…’ emails (like this one you’re reading)
  • AGENDAS: Teachers will do their best to remind kids about upcoming events and order deadlines.
  • SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook (search West Langley PAC) and Instagram (westlangleypac)
  • MEETINGS: Open meetings (anyone can drop in!) are held one Tuesday evening per month. Information will be shared for those that can’t make it after each meeting.

FUNDRAISING:

Our goal: $5000 for new library books

Our library is so old… some of our books still say that Pluto is a planet!

It’s sad, but true. However, we are thrilled to announce an opportunity to update our aging library! West Langley will be part of Indigo Chapters Adopt-a-School program, starting this weekend! Donations from the community can help us to raise up to $5000 towards new books for our library. The number one way you can help is to spread the word: tell your neighbours, your friends, and your friends friends.

Please visit:   adoptaschool.indigo.ca for other ways that you can help!

Over the coming weeks, both parents and students will have opportunities to help us reach our fundraising goal. We are still looking for a couple of volunteers that can help with promotional materials and social media. Email westlangleypac@outlook.com if you might be able to help.

Entertainment Books

Entertainment book sales are underway! If each child sells one book, we will meet our school goal and Mr. Oliver will wear a tutu all day!

There are other fun prizes for most books sold by a student, and by a class.

UPCOMING:

PAC Meeting: Sept 26 @ 6pm in the library.

This meeting is open to all parents and caregivers of West Langley students.

What happens at a PAC meeting? Updates and conversations about what is happening at the school.

This month, we will be talking about hot topics in learning, and priorities for the PAC Spending plan for this year.

Chipotle Fundraiser: October 4

Mark your calendars and save the date! Part proceeds of all orders this date will go towards the PAC. Make sure to let the cashier know you’re part of the West Langley Fundraiser.

Do you work at an office? Find out how to plan a lunch party and help us earn even more.

Quote of the Week

Interesting Reading & Viewing

  • So I was at a seminar for parents of kids with Down Syndrome and learned about a book that teaches the ‘respond but don’t react’ method for dealing with their behaviour. When I searched a little further into that, I found this. The distinction is one I think will prove useful when I talk to students about conflict and behaviour, and it’s one that can serve all of us in the WLE learning community.
  • At the opening assembly this year, I read the students the book What Do You Do With a Problem?. Here it is, along with a bit of description:
